Thomas Griffiths (1790-c1860s) & Elizabeth Martin (1792-1854)
Thomas Griffiths was baptised on 3 January 1790 at Holy Trinity, Eccleshall, in Staffordshire. He was the son of Thomas Griffiths and Frances Worlier of Fair Oak, who had married at Eccleshall on 26 October 1778.
Elizabeth Martin was born on 15 August 1792 and baptised on 17 July at Stone, St Michael, Staffordshire. She was the daughter of John and Mary Martin of Normicott (Normacot), near Stoke on Trent).
Thomas Griffiths, a labourer, and Elizabeth Martin, both of parish of Maer in Staffordshire, were married on 1 April 1816.
Their children were baptised at Ashley in Staffordshire and Thomas’s occupation was listed as labourer:
- Frances, baptised 13 February 1820. She married Thomas Lawton (a servant) in April 1842 and they lived at The Hollins in Talke where Thomas worked as a labourer in coal mines. They had a daughter, with whom Frances lived after Thomas died in 1871 – next door to her sister Elizabeth (who married Charles Lawton).
- John baptised 5 April 1822.
- Samuel baptised 12 December 1824.
- George baptised 22 June 1828. He married and remained living in Ashley working as an agricultural labourer, and by 1881 was farming 13 acres. He died in 1909.
- Thomas baptised 29 July 1832. He married and remained living in Ashley working as an agricultural labourer.
- Elizabeth baptised 13 April 1834. She married Charles Lawton.
- James baptised 21 October 1838. In 1861 he was working as a carter and staying with his sister Frances in Talke. He died on 1909.
At the time of the 1841 census, Thomas was working as a day labourer, his wife Elizabeth and children Thomas, Elizabeth, James, and George were living at Ashley. Thomas (an agricultural labourer) and Elizabeth were still there in the 1851 census, and staying with them was their nephew Joseph Martin, a tailor aged 20.
Elizabeth died aged 64 in 1854 was buried at Ashley on 3 September 1854 aged 64.
After Elizabeth’s death Thomas moved to Talke and was living there, described as a labourer, when his daughter, Elizabeth married in 1857. At the time of the 1861 census, Thomas was living in Talke with his son-in-law and daughter, Thomas and Frances Lawton. He was described as a labourer and also staying there was James Griffiths, who was described as a carter.
There is currently no traceable verified record of the death of Thomas Griffiths, but is assumed to in the 1860s.
